May-July 06 - Training Update
Learning to type and increasing your speed, camcorder skills, free training videos online, copyright issues for trainers, chocolate training, sign generators, showing cooking photos online, resumes online, Excel beginners tutorial
_____________________ Learning to type quickly is on everyone's list. There's the traditional software like Mavis Beacon, and now a lot of online services as well. A good review of what's available here at Lifehacker and the speed test I like is at TypingTest. Keyboard skills, especially for men, sorts out the digital natives (< 30) from the digital immigrants ( >30). _____________________
Do a search under "chef" at Google Video and see the 'You're the chef' videos available - all for free! _____________________
_____________________ Blogging for trainers and teachers. Huh? Yes, it's time to explore... Dean Shareski makes a good point: If we as educators have never entered into a global conversation, it's not likely we'll ever create that opportunity for our students. But as we all know...kids are already having them so when will we?More thoughtful links at Graham Wegner's Blog _____________________ Just discovered Tourism & Hospitality NetworkEd in my own backyard, as it were. Also a keen blogger at NetworkLearning. _____________________
A great resource for students at BlendedChocolate.com - 3 lessons on where it comes from, tempering and working with moulds, and perfecting skills. Self-paced, with lots of pictures. _____________________
_____________________ Great example of using Bubbleshare to show assessing a student chef's work. Animation adds interest. Here's the chef talking about what he's doing. Thanks again to the THED group - I'm finding lots of great material to share... _____________________
_____________________ Our trainees eventually become job hunters. Emurse (it means 'resume', but improved) is an elegant way to put your resume online (even multiple versions) and track how many times it's been read. Email the link with your job application. A good article here about its features. _____________________ Every manager and chef needs to have Excel under their belt - it's a basic tool these days. Here's a very good, free online spreadsheet tutorial, starting right from the beginning. _____________________ The TED site has more than a dozen flash movies of inspiring presenters in action. Great for honing your stage skills... _____________________
