Hog's Breath Cafes supporting Dragons Abreast
Abreast in Australia 2007: Sept 28-30 at Caloundra in Queensland.

Dragons Abreast changes the face of breast cancer awareness!

One in three Australian women will have an experience with breast cancer in their lifetime according to the stats. The recent three day Abreast in Australia 2007 dragon boat regatta, the culmination of our sponsorship experiment, breathed new life into the cause when Dragons Abreast Australia hosted the largest dragon boat race in the southern hemisphere . Attracting 2,000 competitiors - all breast cancer survivors from around the world - and more than 4,000 spectators and supporters to Lake Kawana in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, the event was a huge success.

Taking two years to plan and raise the necessary $1.2 million, Michelle Hanton and her small organising committee simply pulled off a miracle. It took ingenuity, hard work, perserverance beyond belief, and sponsors - including a number of very generous Hogs Breath Cafes - to make it happen. The event proved to be an inspiring celebration of life and an experience of a lifetime for participants and their supporters.

Lake Kawana was the ideal location for the dragon boat races and off-water activities. Market stalls, workshops, exhibitions, mini movies for the event's participants and heaps of fun family activities enhanced the largest event of its kind ever to be staged in Australia. You can watch a great collection of videos of the event.

The goal to raise awareness for breast cancer was certainly achieved - media exposure was enormous. Now having spent every cent raised in pulling this event off, Dragons Abreast needs all the assistance it can get for its ongoing work in providing opportunities, equipment, education and facilities to assist many more of the 13,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - every small amount counts and YOUR DONATION will be most appreciated.

Adelaide event rocks!
Pink champagne, Hoggies Dollars and so much food that many who had planned to stay for dinner didn't! The generosity of our host Jason Lane and his charming manageress Ali was so impressive.

If the noise level and buzz was any indication the launch at Adelaide City Hog's Breath Cafe could not have been better. Host Jason said he and his team were thrilled to have the opportunity to support Dragons Abreast and their great work.

A portable sound system ensured that Anna Wellings Booth's address was heard, and touched the hearts of all attending. The message is spread further, through an upcoming article in the Adelaide Advertiser and a radio interview.

Joondalup WA book signing, complete with feather!
Joondalup Hog's Breath launch in WA was a very successful affair, despite a torrential down pour just prior to the event.

Owner Phil Bailey was a popular 'guest of honour', signing many of the 40 books purchased on the night. He demonstrated his support for DA not only with superb hospitality but buying six copies of A Dragon's Tale himself. Thanks Phil (and thanks for being the force behind the great Hog's Breath contribution across the country).

A fantastic night had by all and three cheers for the Joondalup Hoggie's team. The WA Dragons Abreaster's look forward to an ongoing relationship with Phil and Joondalup Hog's Breath Cafe.

Melbourne's Herald-Sun comes snapping
Ideal conditions for surfing, definitely not paddling, when Melbourne's Herald Sun photographer came to catch the Melbourne DAM Buster's training session at Docklands, in preparation for Caloundra.

The photographer wanted the Dragon's Head as a colourful prop in the foreground. Victoria DA Co-ordinator Pru Menzies realised this would have been an ideal opportunity to show off the DAM Busters vibrant new Dragon - next time!

When a media opportunity arises, it's great to be prepared.

I can't hear you!
Hosting a corporate or group event without AV sound equipment could mean problems - you attracted a large group and now they can't hear about the good stuff. In the past, cost has been a consideration, but now, like all technology, the cost is much lower. It will come back to you in repeat bookings and a more professional reputation as venue of choice.

Talk to your tech people about adding a microphone input to the amplifier you use for music (karaoke anyone?) or grab a portable one like this little unit (availbale locally). Everyone will love you.

Hobart launch - small city and big results
The Hobart launch of "A Dragon's Tale " was another great success. A morning link up on ABC Radio resulted in a follow up contact with ABC in Caloundra. The radio interview also prompted a listener to contact us, buy a book and come to the launch.

Southern Cross TV covered the launch and Thursday's "Mercury" newspaper article about the launch mentioned the book, price and where it could be bought. Seventy eight guests attended the launch, and 37 stayed for a meal.

Hoggies got a shot on TV, but visibility would have been more obvious if there had been a Hoggies Pink Pig in the crowd - that gal rocks when she's around! The staff headed by the supervisors Em and Ness were brilliant. Thanks to all the Hoggies team and the food was delicious. An astounding 56 books were sold!

Melbourne launch - most delicious yet?
Melbourne's launch at Knox Hog's Breath Cafe was a great celebration.

MC Pru Menzies introduced Anna Wellings Booth from Canberra who officially launched the book, Sue Smith showed a moving DVD of the Warrior Women exhibition (photographs, video productions, writing and art by Dragons Abreast members) and more than 36 books were sold.

Matt Carol and his team had prepared the most succulent, delicious finger food imaginable - superb experience enjoyed by all, and many stayed on to share a laugh and delicious meal afterwards.

Only problem was lack of a PA system and some guests missed the power of Anna's inspiring message. Good sound at such an event is a must!

Canberra launch includes main local paper and MPs
Annabelle Pegrum, Chief Executive of the National Capital Authority was guest speaker at the Canberra launch of A Dragon's Tale, held at Hog's Breath Cafe Woden.

While it was a bit hard to hear her words, the guests were clearly prepared for a good time, and more than 25 'Dragons' and friends stayed on for dinner afterwards. Media attended the event, the Canberra Times has already run one article including a mention of Hog's Breath Woden, with another still to come.

Unfortunately we don't have any photos of the Woden management and team - rumour has it they were shy! Have to become more comfortable about self promotion and adding to your own photo library - see article below!

Sharing all those photos
Digital cameras mean we now have hundreds of photos, not just a few prints. But what do you do with them all?

Michelle Hanton of Dragons Abreast has been snapping away at all her launches and events, and has now started to use Google's free Picasa Web Album service. You can see her growing collection in Michelle's Album. This is such an easy thing for any restaurant or organisation to do.

A hot tip for turning sponsored events into future business
We've all been to charity events where the food has been...ordinary. Baby quiche, spring rolls etc zzzzzzzz - nothing that creates memories of the venue. Cheap options that sabotage results for the venue.

Jo Kelly, chief piggy at Hog's Breath in Caloundra took a much smarter approach when catering for the launch on Monday night. They say they're 'famous for their steaks', so one of the main snack items handed around were cubes of this famous product - tender, juicy, hot and bite-sized. I can't remember a time when people raved about the food and the cause at an event like they did at this event. A very smart decision...
